Governance 101 is a two-hour online course that provides charter school board members with a comprehensive introduction to effective governance.

  • The course covers the fundamentals of charter schools and board service, including core responsibilities such as policy making, advocacy, and public accountability.
  • Participants learn about the legal framework governing charter schools, including compliance with federal, state, and local laws, Open Meeting Act requirements, and ethical standards related to conflicts of interest.
  • The training also addresses financial oversight responsibilities, including budgeting, audits, risk management, and internal controls.
  • In addition, the course explores board structure, bylaws, leadership roles, committee organization, and the distinction between governance and management.
  • Finally, the course prepares board members to build strong, compliant relationships with authorizers and understand key oversight processes such as annual reviews and charter renewal.
